Adding images to your web site

These pages guide you through adding an image to your Soothed web site.

All pages will allow you to embed an image within an area of text. In addition, some pages may have a dedicated standalone image that you can control. Both the embedded and dedicated images use the image manager for uploading and selecting an image.

Help pages in this section

  • Image manager - for uploading and editing images. The image manager is used for both standalone and embedded images.
  • Embedding an image - shows you how to add an image within an area of text so that the text flows around the image.
  • Add a standalone image - shows you how to choose an image for a dedicated area within a page. (Not all pages have this feature.)

Troubleshooting

Q. My images are grainy, or taking a long time to load

For best results, you need to resize the images so that they are the size they need to be for displaying on your pages. While the web browser (eg. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari) can resize them for you it will usually do a bad job, and it will still need to download the big image stored on your web site. This will be slow, particularly for your visitors on modems.

Q. I need to have smaller versions of some images as well as bigger ones

You can use the image manager to resize your images. We suggest you create a "thumbnails" directory to save your smaller images. You'll need to upload a new copy to resize as the bigger version too.

Q. I need to reupload an image, but it won't let me overwrite it.

You'll need to delete your original image first. You could also provide a new name for the file when uploading.

Q. My images are not appearing on the page / displaying as red crosses

Internet explorer will display broken images as a red cross , while firefox usually just misses them out entirely. To fix the problem, try reselecting the file in the image manager. If it doesn't show correctly in the image manager either, then try reuploading. If you're still having problems, drop us a line, and we'll investigate for you.

Q. I can't access the image manager. What's wrong?

Some popup blockers (e.g. google toolbar) disallow access to the image manager and file manager. If you're running a popup blocker, you might need to disable it temporarily, or add an exception for your own domain.

Q. I can't upload an image. The error message says "Upload failed, check your folder write permissions."

There is a problem with the way your web server has been set up. Please contact support for assistance, mentioning the error message text and the name of the folder you're trying to upload your image to.

Q. I can't upload an image. The error message says "Filename is not valid."

The most common cause of this problem is having spaces in the filename. Try again removing any spaces from the "As file name" field.
